Bigger Picture

Our food system is unsustainable. Conventional farming is damaging soil health, threatening biodiversity and contributing to 37% global GHG emissions. Intensive land use has released huge quantities of carbon from the soil. But there is hope. Restoring soil carbon through climate-positive farming could transform farms from a source of emissions to a sink and bring benefits beyond CDR.

The Problem

For farmers to transition to environmentally friendly practices that help to restore the planet, they need the knowledge to act, and an incentive to do so. Equally, farmers who do transition should be rewarded for the work they do. Regenerative farming takes time, effort and money, and every farm is different. Today there is limited data on the actual impact of different regenerative techniques, and limited ways for farmers to understand what regenerative practices would work on their farm, while maintaining yield. Building high quality data datasets should help demonstrate improvements in soil carbon and farm health. However, given that farmers are running on razor thin margins, the risk of transforming practices could be too great without sufficient incentive.

Why BX Technologies?

Data transparency in food supply chains BX is creating a platform that consolidates and tracks data from farm to retailer. Their platform aims to provide clarity in the opaque and emissions-intensive food supply chain. By tracking farm data in the farming industry and overlaying with AI technology, BX will feed insights back to the farmer to bring about positive behavioural change.

Leading the way with retailers Big business are increasingly committing to reducing their Scope 3 emissions, which for food retailers means sourcing low carbon produce. BX is connecting retailers with farms, enabling them to join the sustainable food transition.

Empowering climate-conscious consumers BX is quantifying the climate impact of the produce that is on its platform, enabling consumers to make carbon conscious decisions about the food they buy.

Spearheaded by experts in fruit production Incubated and spun out of Bardsley England, the UK’s 2nd largest apple farming enterprise, the team at BX have been collecting data and mapping trends on new farming techniques on 500+ hectares.
