WHAT WE LOOK FOR
Counteract aims to break down the barriers to carbon removal at scale. We will deploy our resources into a portfolio of initiatives spanning nature based and engineered solutions, with 4 key criteria in mind:
DIVERSE
We don’t expect any single carbon removal pathway will emerge as the best in all circumstances. Solution fit will depend on synergies with and the opportunities from local ecosystems - cultural, natural and economic.
We back the spectrum of nature-based solutions to engineered ones, looking for projects that contribute something new to the ecosystem.
CATALYTIC
No solution has the capacity to remove gigatons of CO2e today. However several have the potential to achieve that through system change, enabling or inspiring others with technology, breakthrough commercial models or other ripple effects. We will back projects where our support, network and influence can help unleash these multiplicative benefits to create line of sight to 0.5Gt of CO2e removal, directly or indirectly, by 2050.
SELF-SUSTAINING
We believe in solutions that support themselves at scale. We help high potential teams with accountable and lasting solutions realise opportunities in the carbon market. The best of these will scale at the pace of demand, which is growing rapidly.
RESPONSIBLE
We will seek out regenerative solutions with social and environmental co-benefits and strive to account for the entire lifecycle. We won’t allow carbon removal to excuse emissions that could be avoided and we will consider the potential impact of solutions on other environmental objectives, promoting a Just Transition where possible.
